Breakthrough Teens is a youth engagement initiative of the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department that connects teens across Mobile with safe, positive opportunities for growth. Through enrichment programs, leadership experiences, and community events, Breakthrough Teens helps young people build confidence, develop life skills, and form meaningful connections with peers. From cooking classes and social events to career and college exploration, our programs empower the next generation of Mobile leaders.
Our Programs
Youth Empowered for Success (Y.E.S.) The Youth Empowered for Success initiative connects teens and young adults with meaningful career opportunities and workforce development experiences. Through paid internships, mentorship, and skills training, participants gain real-world experience while exploring future career paths.
The program helps young people build professional confidence, develop workplace skills, and connect with employers across the community.
College ToursBreakthrough Teens College Tours give students the opportunity to visit college campuses and explore higher education firsthand. These experiences introduce participants to academic programs, campus life, and potential career pathways while helping them envision their future beyond high school.
For many students, these tours provide their first opportunity to step onto a college campus and see what is possible.
Youth Advisory Board The Youth Advisory Board provides teens with a platform to share their ideas and help shape youth programming across the city. Student representatives meet regularly to develop events, provide feedback, and represent the voices of young people in community initiatives.
Participants build leadership skills, confidence, and civic engagement while working collaboratively to improve opportunities for Mobile’s youth.
Hump Day Hangouts Hump Day Hangouts provide a relaxed midweek space where teens can connect, unwind, and engage in creative activities. Each gathering offers a positive environment where students can socialize, participate in themed activities, and enjoy a safe space designed specifically for teens
The program encourages meaningful peer interaction and helps build a sense of belonging among participants.
Teen Cooking Classes Teen Cooking Classes introduce participants to essential culinary skills in a fun, hands-on setting. Teens learn kitchen safety, food preparation techniques, and practical cooking skills while building confidence and independence.
These classes encourage creativity, teamwork, and healthy habits that students can carry into everyday life.
