At approximately 10:05 AM, Mobile Fire-Rescue responded to South Reed Avenue for reports of a residence on fire in the area. Upon arrival on scene, fire personnel discovered a 2-story home with flames and heavy smoke present on the second floor.
Two residents were able to evacuate the structure. One occupant was treated at the scene, after he was forced to escape the burning home by leaping from a second floor window. Firemedics determined that the patient suffered significant right leg injuries and promptly transported to an area hospital.
The second resident was able to safely evacuate without injury. Two family pets (dogs) were found deceased on the second floor of the home.
More than 30 firefighters battled back flames and thick, turbulent smoke for approximately 40 minutes before the fire was under control.
The historic home sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, pending an ongoing investigation.
