The City of Mobile will host another Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Sept. 26, giving Mobilians an easy way to discard items that cannot be collected by regular sanitation services.
The free event is being organized by the City of Mobile Environmental Engineering Department and will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the James Seals Community Center.
Since 2022, the city has hosted Household Hazardous Waste Collection events to give Mobile residents a convenient way to safely and responsibly discard items the city is unable to collect during routine trash and garbage service. This includes common household items such as automotive fluids, aerosols, herbicides, fertilizers, fluorescent tubes, paint, cleaners, pesticides, and batteries.
While many common items are accepted, others are not. Things like scrap tires, explosives, firearms, electronics, pharmaceuticals, medical waste, appliances, and mechanical equipment WILL NOT be accepted. A comprehensive list of acceptable and unacceptable items is available at https://www.cityofmobile.gov/hhw/. For additional information, call the Environmental Engineering Department at (251) 208-7151.
There is no registration requirement to participate, but the event is open to Mobile residents and individuals only. Contractors and businesses will not be allowed to drop off items during the event, and organizers will be verifying zip codes to ensure participants reside within the city limits.
“I’m proud the city can provide this event that allows residents to discard items not normally taken through our regular sanitation services,” Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said. “Since the very first Household Hazardous Waste event in 2022, we have collected and disposed of nearly 100 tons of hazardous waste that might have otherwise ended up on our roadsides or in local waterways. Our Environmental Engineering team has grown these events into something that truly makes a positive impact on our ecosystem and the lives of Mobilians.”
