Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile is proud to celebrate the dedicated employees who help make the community safer and more resilient through their work regulating the construction of both public and private structures in the city.
Build Mobile, in conjunction with the Code Officials of Lower Alabama (COLA), have planned special events throughout May as part of Building Safety Month. The events in Mobile are designed to highlight the important role city inspectors play in safeguarding residents from fire, weather-related events and other issues by ensuring construction projects comply with the latest building safety codes.
Through their behind-the-scenes work, inspectors help ensure that homes, businesses, schools and public facilities throughout the city are built to safely serve residents for generations to come.
To help honor these hard-working employees, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis will tour the Annette N, Shelby Health and Science Innovation Center on the campus of Spring Hill College (SHC) at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, along with city inspectors, SHC representatives, including President Dr. Mary Van Brunt, and other officials. The tour will provide insight into the process city inspectors use when visiting projects that are under construction.
“The work our city inspectors do tends to fly under the radar, but they have extremely important jobs,” Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said. “By enforcing building codes at construction sites, they are ensuring that structures are safe, resilient, and can better withstand natural disasters, while creating secure places where our citizens can live, work and thrive.”
To cap off the month of activities, Mayor Cheriogotis will join officials with the South Alabama Homebuilders Academy for a tour of their facility at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2. The facility located at 2448 Gordon Smith Drive offers hands-on construction skills training for workers seeking to enter the residential construction industry.
Members of the media are invited to join in on the tours of either facility.
In addition to the tours, Build Mobile, COLA and the South Alabama Homebuilders Association (SAHA) are hosting events in recognition of Building Safety Month. Mayor Cheriogotis will present a Building Safety Month proclamation to Build Mobile staffers and COLA representatives during the Mobile City Council meeting on May 19. COLA, SAHA and Build Mobile also hosted a lunch and learn event on Thursday, May 14.
